Research Interests

My current and past research interests are mainly in the field of Machine Learning (ML) and Data Mining (DM) for Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), they include:

·      Applications of ML/DM, esp. embedding them into business specific products

Computational learning theory

Multi-Relational Data Mining (MRDM), e.g. Induction of Logic Programs (ILP), Induction and Description Logic Ontology’s and Description Logic Programs

Multi-Strategy Learning

The pre-processing phase of the KDD-process

Data Mining, Intelligent Assistance for Data Mining via AI-Planning and case-based reasonining

Data Stream reasoning (Event Processing) and learning

1989. Diplom-Informatiker (MSc in Computer Science).
Faculty of Computer Science, Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
Thesis I: Incremental and reversible acquisition of taxonomic knowledge.
Thesis II: Conceptual Clustering of KL-One Concept-hierachies.

1997. Dr.-Ing. (PhD) in Computer Science.
Faculty of Computer Science, Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
Thesis: Inductive Analysis of relational data.

·      1985 - 1986 Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionsanlagen und Konstruktionstechnik, Berlin, Germany. Research student in the project "Graphische Simulation NC-gesteuerter Drehmaschinen".

1986 - 1989 Technical University of Berlin, Berlin, Germany Research student  in the project "LERNER: Modellbildung durch Wissensakquisition und Maschinelles Lernen"

1989 - 1994 German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD-FITKI, Now: FhG-AIS), Sankt Augustin, Germany. Researcher in the European Union ESPRIT-Research Projects "Machine Learning Toolbox" and "Inductive Logic Programming", involved in the development of the integrated Machine Learning and Knowledge Acquisition system "MOBAL".

1995 - 1997 Albers +   Fromberger OHG, Dortmund,Germany. Consultant and Software-Enggineer for the PPS-System "A+F Team".

1997 - 2002 Rentenanstalt/Swiss Life, Zürich, Switzerland. Senior researcher/project leader in the business process modelling and automation project Eule2, the Swiss Life Data Mining and Text Mining activities and the European Union IST-Project Mining Mart.

2002 - 2004 kdlabs AG, Zürich, Switzerland. Design and develop analytical products, i.e. incorporate data mining into products for advanced business solutions, e.g. the money laundering detection solution kdprevent the customer satisfaction simulator kdimpact. Data Mining service projects in the areas of analytical CRM, e.g. cross-selling, customer/employee satisfaction analysis, web-usage mining.

2009 – June 2014 senior researcher at the Dynamic and Distributed Information Systems Group (DDIS) of the Department of Informatics at University of Zurich working in the European Union FP7 Collaborative Research Project e-LICO on end-user support for Data Mining, i.e. combining planning, case-based reasoning and meta-learning into a collaborative KDD process assistant and in the European Union FP7 Project ViSTA-TV to generate data describing live TV programming together with consumers’ anonymized viewing behavior.         

Teaching

·      Since WS 2000/2001 (currently each Spring Semester): Course on  "Data Mining for knowledge discovery in databases" at the Institute for Computer Science of the Univ. of Zürich,  (2000-2004 together with M. Staudt).
